Wine is complicated, right? How do you navigate the retail wine store or the restaurant wine list today? So much wine - so little time - has never been truer. Consider Riesling. Sommeliers love Riesling because it’s so versatile. There are a multitude of styles, and a multitude of regions that are growing and making Riesling wine from dry to sweet and everything in between. If you are not a working wine professional however, how do you keep up with Riesling Revolution and styles that you prefer? Where Riesling was once primarily associated with Germany and considered a sweet table wine, today this is not the case. There is a plethora of wineries around the globe producing high quality, complex and age worthy styles of Riesling in both the old and new world of wine. It takes a special personality to reach out and offer assistance without causing insult. Steve and Annette did just that back in March of 2020. If not for their 9 am phone conference call on a Saturday morning encouraging me to buy Zoom Pro and teaching me how to use it to its full potential – none of this Good Wine Gal Thursday Wine sessions with Mark Shipway would have happened. This was followed on with Steve showing up to our red wine sessions and Annette attending our white wine sessions with both of them attending those early day “happy hour” calls where we sipped and talked our way through the first lockdown. Here is a little tribute to Steve and Annette for their continued support of Good Wine Gal and our online wine sessions. Thank you both for your generosity and kindness.
Frescobaldi Lamaione 2013Merlot has been a much maligned grape in recent times; maybe it’s typical soft, seductive profile simply fails to resonate with a generation of wine drinkers searching for ever more edgier, sharp edged sips; or maybe it’s just a case of preconceived notions of a comforting yet uninspiring taste experience. Whatever the reason, it is high time to revisit this variety and discover exactly what makes wines from Merlot both instantly delicious and objectively great. Looking for those benchmark bottles at affordable prices can be challenging and the tip is here, as it so often is when it comes to wine buying, rewards come to those who chose to look further than the usual well-beaten path. In the case of Merlot, one of the finest of those fields afar can be found on a gently rolling Tuscan hillside where tradition, technique, soil and climate conspire to create that grape’s signature hedonistic quality with a uniquely Italian twist.
It hangs on the wall, just covering up the old thermostat that is no longer in use. It says, “You had me at Merlot.” It’s a play on the famous line from “Jerry McGuire” where Rene Zellweger admits that she’s loved him from the first moment they met. Ah, love! Whether or not you feel that way about Merlot, for many it’s the tag line that sticks. The first love, the first encounter, the first sip, Merlot made it easy to love. No rough edges, round smooth texture and mouth filling richness. If you didn’t know what to sip, Merlot was a good choice.
Bernard Defaix Saint Bris Sauvignon 2018 The appellation of Saint Bris is surely an oddball in the Burgundian vineyard, albeit a very welcome one; a white wine crafted from the crisply aromatic Sauvignon Blanc grape rather than its more subtlety complex and distinctly more signature variety, Chardonnay. Saint Bris is a tiny northern French wine-growing zone of barely 250 acres planted on slopes surrounding the eponymous village of Saint-Bris-le-Vineux (itself located just 15 km south-west of the altogether more famous town of Chablis). The reasons for Sauvignon Blanc being planted here are not entirely clear, with the history of this grape tied to place being relatively recent in Burgundian terms, suggesting perhaps a more market driven impetus behind this current synergy. Even though there are significant similarities in terms of climate and soil between Saint Bris and the Loire Valley’s more globally famous Sancerre, the styles of wine produced show marked differences, the former expressing a touch of varietal exuberance and later being a more classical model of restraint. February is the month of love. Let’s celebrate. After all, we call ourselves ‘winelovers’. Spreading the love of wine is natural. moved to wine country. Domaine de l'Aigle Pinot Noir 2018Although for the majority of wine drinkers, French pinot noir is virtually synonymous with red Burgundy, such unilateral thinking can deny us from discovering the increasingly good examples of this grape from some of France’s less likely wine-growing zones. Perhaps the most counterintuitive of these for successful production of a cool climate variety, is tucked away in the Mediterranean influenced region of Languedoc-Roussillon. The rationale becomes less obscure when we learn that these particular vineyards are located high in the cooler foothills of the Pyrenean mountain range near the sleepy town of Limoux - Domaine de l'Aigle itself has vines planted up to 500 meters.
Meet Nicole Lougheed. Nicole lives and breathes a fast paced marketing career here in Vancouver. As a result of Covid 19, she spends her time at her home office coping stealthily with wine and friends. Truth be told, this is a seasoned wine gal who shops with a fist and a list. You can count on Nicole to bring a classic bottle of wine to our Thursday evening Zoom sessions with Mark Shipway. When it’s her turn to share, she’ll slip in a comment that maybe she should have cellared this one longer, maybe she should not have opened this one (it needs another 5 years) or she really shouldn’t have touched this bottle from her collection because, well, it was from her collection. In the end, she admits that she deserves it and we all nod in agreement. She really does. It’s rumored that she put the last of her wine collection under lock and thrown away the key so as to prevent any further wine anarchy and to give these remaining bottles a chance to age gracefully. It’s also rumored that she leads the East Van Wine Appreciation Society. Thank you for bringing your positive energy, beautiful bottles and new faces to Good Wine Gal! Don’t change. International Star Chardonnay is a semi-aromatic grape variety and the world’s most famous white wine. With roots in France and planted around the globe, it’s the number one white planted international grape variety. And while many recall the hangover effects of the mistreatment of this varietal (too much oak, too much alcohol, too ripe and a lack of acidity), today there are amazing bottles and producers in the market expressing Chardonnay with crisp freshness, balanced richness and a finesse of oak and complexity. Catena Appellation Agrelo Cabernet Sauvignon 2016Cabernet Sauvignon is Argentina’s under-the-radar vinous gem. Overshadowed by both the fame and planted acreage of signature Malbec, this variety literally gets to shine under the bright Mendocinian sun (Mendoza is Argentina’s best region for Cab Sauv).

It may be one of the truly great wines of the world—certainly one of the most famous. There is no better time of year to open a bottle of Port than in the cold snowy winter. Here are my three Port Wine suggestions for the holiday celebrations with food pairings and various budgets in mind. France is the land of vine and wine! Meet Dwight Sick, winemaker at Moraine Winery.There are many reasons why I love the Naramata Bench. It is on this stretch of a road that winds 26 kilometers from Penticton to the village of Naramata, amongst the 40 wineries that reside here - we find Moraine Winery. At only 10 minutes from Penticton, Moraine finds itself in the heart of it all. Here you will find - good wine, a gorgeous lake view and fabulous sunsets. Meet Dwight Sick, winemaker at Moraine Winery. He’s busy selecting tanks and barrels and blending wine for perfection. Dwight is not a newbie to the valley, or to winemaking. In fact after 15 vintages, this veteran winemaker still considers himself a “student”. Recognizing that all wines begin in the vineyard, Dwight believes Moraine has a unique micro climate affect by the lakes influence and this along with the regime of sustainable practices in their elevated vineyard sites will result in award winning, age-worthy wines. Wine Recommendations for “Rising Stars of Southern France”
Where are we? The Pays d'Oc (Languedoc-Roussillon region) is located in the south of France delineated to the west by the border of Spain and to the east Montpellier. It contributes approximately 25% of the total wine production in France. It has long been considered the bulk wine capital of France, sometimes called a “wine lake”. Land is considerably less expensive here and terroir supports a wide variety of grapes. Increasing new wine makers are finding their way to this region and building brands. This historic and ancient are with its a hilly and rocky land that is oriented towards the Mediterranean sea. Diversity is the key of this region. The south west is influenced by both the Atlantic and Mediterranean with strong winds providing both positive and negative benefits. Blowing winds are helpful in reducing humidity and therefore the risk of disease and pests. Not only is this a beautiful area of France that has perhaps been overlooked, it also is the “rising star” of red wine. Why am I always out of white wine? It’s one of the great mysteries in my house. While all seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter - have a place for white wine, whites in my home are lacking. If however, you look in my cellar, you will find excellent bottles of Chardonnay and Riesling, both age worthy and fantastic food wines. You could conclude then that despite my complaining, and the winter freeze, I do have white wines at home and that sipping these chilled styles with elegant flavours and textures is part of my holiday delight. You would be correct! |
