The Mayhem Maker: Terry Meyer-Stone Ever had one of those great ideas that was born over a few glasses of wine? For brother-sister duo Jak Meyer and Terry Meyer-Stone, a shared vision sparked while enjoying some vino gave rise to Mayhem Wines. And yes, it’s just as fun as it sounds. Women in Wine While Jak was busy building his now well-known Meyer Family Vineyards, Terry, a true "good wine gal" with a background in marketing, was quietly farming a unique vineyard with her husband Andrew on Anarchist Mountain. What started as a simple arrangement for Jak to purchase Terry's grapes quickly evolved into something more. It became Mayhem, a separate brand dedicated to crafting intentional, fresh, and juicy wines meant to be enjoyed now. Terry’s journey from a marketing professional to a hands-on vigneron is a testament to the growing influence of women in the BC wine industry. She and Andrew acquired their Osoyoos vineyard in 2009, a decision that cemented their commitment to the land and their philosophy. The Mayhem philosophy is fresh, innovative, and above all, fun. As a brand president, Terry’s love for "day drinking" and "nap-atizers" perfectly encapsulates the brand's laid-back spirit. She doesn't shake your hand when you meet; she gives you a big, warm hug. While Terry’s passion is rooted in the vineyard and the business of the winery, the art of winemaking is led by winemaker Ajay Chavan. Originally from New Zealand and with five years of experience at CheckMate Artisanal Winery, Ajay brings a fresh perspective to the Mayhem portfolio. His goal? To create wines that are vibrant, expressive, and ready for your glass—something I can personally vouch for after tasting the new vintages. I was even treated to their sparkling wine in cans—a nod to the convenience of the day-drinking lifestyle. Wine Recommendations: Red, White & Bubbles in a Can The lineup is designed to be approachable. The White Label Sauvignon Blanc is a fantastic patio party wine at just $21, offering a clean, bright freshness perfect for everything from creamy brie to prawn cocktails. This is "Crafted in BC" with grapes sourced from Washington State, and part of a series that includes Rosé (made from 100% Merlot from Gearheart Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope. For those looking for something a bit bolder, the 2024 Black Label "Anarchy" series, priced at $26, pushes the local boundaries. The 2024 Black Label Anarchy Sauvignon Blanc is a dry, aromatic wine with notes of citrus and green gauge. Sourced from the Rosebud Vineyard & Talcott Vineyard in the Wahluke Slope, this style is a testament to good farming practices, healthy soils and beautiful fruit. Their flagship red, the 2021 Black Label Anarchy Merlot, comes from that original 4-acre vineyard on Anarchist Mountain. Planted in 1994 at 1,700 feet, the site's unique microclimate—with frost rolling downhill and surrounded by sage—imparts a subtle herbaceous undertone to the wine. One day we might call this "Classic Okanagan Merlot". Only 120 cases were produced, finally bottled un-fined, and un-filtered in late Spring of 2023. Get it while it lasts. $40 at the winery. If you go you will need the Winery Location: 4287 McLean Creek Rd, Okanagan Falls, BC V0H 1R1 (located on the same property as Meyer Family Vineyards). As Terry notes, succeeding in this industry requires being a great farmer, a sharp business person, and having the perseverance and love for people to build a community. It's a challenge they embrace, driven by a bigger goal: to "move the needle" for Canadian wine and encourage more locals to choose local. #buylocal Thank you!If you love wine and want to support our local industry, women in wine and sustainability, hop on over to their website and check out the offering.
