Famous Hungarian FurmintFurmint, (pronounced "For-Mint") is a white wine grape variety indigenous to the Tokaj region of Hungary where it is grown predominantly and used in the making of sparking, sweet and dry white wine. Furmint February Recommendations 2024Here in the local BC market Furmint is available at BC Liquor stores (government) as well as the top private wine stores like Marquis Wine Cellar, Legacy Liquor Store and Everything Wine. After a little research, here are my top recommendations. I visited Tokaj in 2020, just before Covid and if you are interested in my adventures here is a link to the story. CHATEAU DERESZLA 2021 DRY FURMINT $17.99Chateau Dereszla produces top quality sparkling, dry and sweet wines in the heart of Tokaj. This is a dry white wine blend of predominantly Furmint with a touch of Muskotály, also known as Muscat Ottonel, with ample body, excellent acidity, subtle floral aromas and citrus flavours and a noticeable mineral spine that makes this a versatile food wine. It's a perfect pairing with traditional Hungarian fare of homemade noodles in cream with farmer paprika sausage, rich fish or chicken dishes or a table of charcuterie. This is "good wine". 12% abv. Available at 42 BC Liquor Stores. SZENT TAMAS MAD 2021 DRY FURMINT $30.98One of my favorite and oldest producers of Furmint in one of the most important towns in Tokaj. Szent Tamas (Saint Thomas) produces MAD which arrived in the market in 2018. The style is highlights the terroir with its mineral driven character, racy acidity and elegant texture and finesse. Nothing short of perfection and this is just the entry level style. A range of styles are in the BC market at Everything Wine. Chateau MEGYER 2020 DRY FURMINT $26.73.Chateau Megyer Dry Furmint offers a lighter body, more fruit notes, nice freshness, and a fruity finish. It's another example of style driven by terroir. From green apples, fresh citrus to honey and hay, there is a lot of character in this bottle. It's dry and is good on it's own or with Aburi sushi. 11.5% abv. Available at Legacy Liquor Store.
