Reds of Southern Italy!
Mar 11, 2021
Italy is known as land of vine and wine! They say over 1000 grape varieties can be found growing in diverse micro climates and ancient soils over a landmass where wine growing has existed for thousands of years. Most of us are familiar with Tuscany, famous for Chianti and the Sangiovese grape, but there is so much more just under the radar.
"Reds of Southern Italy" is an online wine class comprised of a comprehensive educational presentation followed by an interactive tasting component focusing on key grapes and wine appellations of this southern region considered the Italian south which encompasses: Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicilia & Sardegna.
With many interesting grape varieties, the south of Italy presents lots of tasting experiences. If you like bold rich red wines then Primitivo (related to Zinfandel) may be to your liking. If you like lighter body in the Pinot Noir style then Sicilian Nero d’Avola may be to your liking. If you are a Barolo fan the Aglianico will be more to your liking with grippy tannins and lots of power. One of my favorites is Cannanou from Sardegna (a relative of Garnacha) for its fruity and floral aromas and flavours. Highlighted wines represent some excellent higher priced options.
Each session has a learning component and interactive tasting experience. There are 2 Thursday evening sessions to choose from either 4:30 pm (PDT) or 7:30 pm (PDT) on Zoom lasting approximately 1.5 hours.
